TRANSITION ACCOUNT 2008

On July 1st, the Superintendent requested a transition account be established—to receiving funds, goods, or services needed by the schools for this transition year.

As needs are identified, they will be listed. The school committee is setting up an oversight system to assure all funds received are deposited, used, and accounted for.

ITEM

NEED

APPROX. COST

Hot Lunches for one group of students this summer

A change of location resulted in one group of teens having only cold lunches this summer; a teacher requested something more substantial

$  300.00

Donated anonymously by a Greenfield teacher

Replacement carpets at Newton and Federal Street

During a walk-through of these buildings, quite a few classroom carpets were in dire need of replacement

$50,000

The city is covering these costs and has put the carpet out to bid. The lower the cost, the more rooms with soiled and ripped carpets can be replaced

Roof and cornice repairs at Federal Street

This roof has leaks and one seam where water is eroding framing. A stone cornice has separated from the building and is a hazard.

$31,000

The city is covering these costs and plans to have the work completed by September.

Shoulder Vacuums

A custodian has requested shoulder vacuums for more efficient classroom cleaning. These are ergonomically better and the district should use vacuums with HEPA filters.*  http://custodian.info/backpackvac.html

Approx. $300 - $700

Replacement corridor doors (2) at Newton School, with hardware

The door frame is in place.

Est. $1,000

Sick Room Cot

The Newton School nursing office will move to a larger space, and will need two sanitary nursing office cots for children to lie down, if sick, and a privacy screen. This may be a need in other schools.

$350 per cot; $100 per screen**

Children’s Boots

Some children do not have boots for rain and snow to use going outside. A volunteer is needed to store and distribute donated children’s boots.

$10/pair or good used

New Face for the High School

The high school entry needs a new face so it is welcoming

?

Volunteers for inventorying and packing rooms

Grade 4 is moving to the Middle School. The Early Childhood program at N. Parish will move to either Federal Street or have 2 classes each at Federal Street and Newton. Grades K-3 at Four Corners are moving, both to Federal Street and Newton. School consolidation decisions were voted prior to July 1, 2008.

Packing boxes.
