This week’s Parent Update will include:
The April break is from April 17 – April 21. Offices will be closed on April 17th. Administrators and office staff may utilize vacation time during the break so if you need to speak to someone in the buildings or Central Office, please call ahead to make sure someone is available.
Greenfield Community College will be hosting Teen Series Workshops during the April vacation. Finance 101 will be offered on April 19th from 3-4 pm. And Youth Fest will be on April 18th from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm at Greenfield Community College. The flyers can be found on the Greenfield Public Schools website under Families and Communities – Community Partners.
I am very pleased to share that the School Committee voted to approve four of our collective bargaining agreements last night. The Unit A (teachers), Unit C (Instructional Assistants and therapy assistants), Cafeteria Works and Custodians and Maintenance Workers contracts are now ratified!
All members of the union bargaining units as well as those of us negotiating on behalf of the School Committee shared the desire to settle fair contracts and the hard work and commitment to that process paid off. Congratulations to all!
For anyone interested, the deadline is fast approaching to order a 2023 yearbook. In addition to ordering a book, you can also celebrate your students’ milestone by purchasing a Recognition Ad. Ads start at $75. To order, please go to 2023 YEARBOOK. You will be directed to the Green Wave ordering page once you enter the school name (Greenfield High School) and state (Massachusetts). Help make this year’s yearbook a success. The deadline is May 11th. Thank you!
The School Committee voted to approve the FY24 budget reflecting a 10.35% increase over last year’s request to the City.
The Mayor’s Budget includes a 3% increase for the Greenfield Schools, which represents approximately $1.5 million in reductions to the proposed budget.
Wednesday night at the School Committee meeting, I presented some possible budget reductions for the Committee’s consideration. The list can be found on the district website under FY24 Budget Information. The meeting was recorded by GCTV and I would encourage anyone with questions about the budget, the Committee members’ individual thoughts on it, or a detailed discussion about the possible reductions or other factors, to watch the recorded meeting.
A discussion about budget reductions is very challenging as we know almost every area discussed can have an impact on our students. Some are direct in terms of teachers and programs and others are less noticeable like materials and facilities work. However, the total school community is impacted by budget cuts at this level.
I will be discussing the School budget with Ways and Means on April 24th at 6 pm. I will also continue to provide updates on the district website and in the Parent Updates.
