Home 9 Superintendent Updates 9 Parent Update – September 7, 2023

This week’s Parent Update will include:

  • Weather Related Issues
  • Food Service Survey
  • Mass Health Renewal
  • Handbooks
  • School Messenger and Opt-Out
  • Title I Program

The current temperatures have been a surprise to most of us given it’s September.  We have been utilizing mitigation strategies including but not limited to: constant access to water, lights off and limited use of electronics, no outdoor recess or physical education, use of less strenuous activities, and options to move to cooler locations within each building.  Three of our schools have air-conditioned classrooms. I have been in daily communication with principals who are checking in with building nurses and also monitoring the temperatures in our classrooms.  I also visited some classrooms in the last few days to check in with folks myself. Dismissing students can pose substantial hardships on some families and may not result in access to cooler situations for them outside of school.

I respect that some families may not agree with the decisions I make about keeping schools open. This applies the same to heat and cold – if you feel you need to make a different decision about your own children, we respect your right to do so. Please just contact their building so we know they are home safe with their families.

Our School Meals Survey is now live! We’re collecting feedback to build a program that’s appealing & accessible to all students.

We ask that parents and caregivers please send in an updated doctor’s note to their school Nurse for any documented food allergies that require accommodations.

Families who need to renew Mass Health should be receiving information in the mail in blue envelopes. For more information please use this link:

If you have questions, please use any help links on the MassHealth website.

All Student–Parent/Guardian Handbooks are available on our website under each school.  Please review the handbooks for important information.

School, district, and emergency communications are most often sent through the School Messenger program.  We are including all families in the School Messenger list at the start of school.  If you do not wish to receive these communications, you will need to contact the school and request to opt-out.

Please seriously consider this decision.  Communication about emergencies, weather-related closures or unanticipated early school dismissals would all be communicated in this manner, as will attendance calls if your student is absent but we have not received a call or note from the parent/guardian.  Given this important information, we strongly urge you to remain subscribed to School Messenger.

Greenfield’s Title I program offers remedial and early intervention academic support programs provided by highly-qualified teachers and specialists and tutors.  Please stop by our Title I information tables at each Title I school on Meet and Greet night.  There will be flyers with more details on the Title I program as well as School/Home Compacts to sign.  The Title I interventionists will also have some fun giveaways for our students while they last!

Take care and enjoy the Fair!
